Buggatti Veryon! Again!

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Back in Sep of 08, I blogged about this super car and showed a video of it blowing away an overly energetic BMW M3. Well this time, a friend of mine pointed out an even better video…This time, the Buggatti is paired more evenly with the McLaren F1. A BMW powered machine that while it is more than a decade old, was a no-frills high energy sports machine that was the uncompromised champion of raw adrenaline production car pure speed. Well, now technology is fighting for its revenge. Watch the video to enjoy this thrilling moment in car one-upmanship! <Well, maybe you can’t watch the video…it was removed as I just discovered…oh well..I’ll try to find the video somewhere else on the web….great race if you can find it.>

Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell

Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell

A great book by Malcolm Gladwell. This book takes you beyond the power of intuition and shows you how we make decisions unconsciously using a wealth of information that is always present in our world.

Intuition is real, even though we often discount it. Malcolm makes a study out of this phenomenom and shows how our brains process a staggering amount of information and then presents us with its solution…the result is what we often refer to as intuition.

Fascinating book. Read more to learn about how we think even when we are not conscious of our efforts.

Bank of Nigeria Logo

Bank of Nigeria Logo

I knew I was popular with the Russians, Drug companies and Casinos (judging by the number of comments I get on this website from said organizations), but now even Nigeria loves me! And they want to send me $9.7M to show how much love they have for me.

All I have to do is front them some cash so they can be certain I am me and then they will send me my booty. It’s a Prize/inheritance fund (I guess they couldn’t figure out which so it’s both) and get this…the World Bank is going to help process this in Paris because of fraud in Africa! Now, if you know the World Bank like I do then you are aware that they provide loans for developing nations. Apparently, they now also help transfer funds from Nigeria to random folks with an e-mail address! New service I guess!

Even the International Monitory[sic] Fund is getting involved. I guess this is like the International Monetary Fund but different since they just Monitor funds?!? Either that or they just need a spell checker.

In any case, I can’t wait to get my funds. This guy is so eager to get the money to me, he put his house up as collateral. What a guy! (Must be some house!)

Anyway, gotta go, I’ve got to go get my millions from Michael who will make a special trip to London just for me. (London? I thought this was a Paris transaction..oh wait, fraud in Africa…Ah…he’s got this all figured out…Good thing I won’t need to do any thinking for myself!) I’m gonna be rich. Just read below and see for yourself. I’m gonna be rich.

Open Source Manufacturing?!

A circuit board for the masses: the Arduino microcontroller. Photo: James Day

Imagine a world where ideas reign supreme and profits come as an after thought. That is the world that Linux’s founder, Linus Torvalds dreamed up when he launched Linux in 1991.  Well now, many years later, it seems that manufacturing is about to take a turn in this direction.  Arduino is an Italian firm that makes a little microprocessor.  Normal companies jealously guard the engineering secrets that make their box work.  Arduino gives away the plans and hopes you will make many copies and even improve the device.

For anyone who as ever been out looking for a little microprocessor to help you do something better, this is a heavenly gift.  You can modify these plans at low cost to engineer your new device.  And lots of folks already have!  Without licensing fees!

Arduino gadgets: WineM coaster; Snail Light Seeker; interactive embroidery with conductive threads; and Botanicalls, which tells you when your plants need water.

Can this be the wave of the future?  I certainly appreciate a product that is patented and rigorously tested.  I doubt I’d be interested in an open source automobile, but for some things, open source is really going to catch on.  All of my websites are run on open source software  (WordPress) programmed in open source languages (php).  I would love to have inexpensive devices tell me when my kids have left the lights on in their room and turn it off for them.  How about a wireless device that makes sure your plants always have the right amout of moisture?  Automatic curtain closers?  I could go on.  Clearly,  there is room to grow in this market and it may just be the home tinkerer who comes up with the next great device that changes our lives…via open source.

Happy 4th of July!

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

4thofjulyLegally, the United States declared independence from Britain on 2 July 1776.  But two days later, the event was announced in the Declaration of Independence.   We continue to celebrate this momentousoccasion with splendiferous fireworks and delicious BBQs!  We love the fourth of July as much as we love our country.

But let us not forget that many give their lives so that we can continue to maintain our freedoms. For there is a cost to uphold what we believe is right, and that is the freedom we hold so dear.  As Fareed Zakaria states so clearly in his book “The Future of Freedom“, we don’t just want democracy, we want liberal democracy, “a political system marked not only by free and fair elections but also by the rule of law, a separation of powers, and the protection of basic liberties of speech, assembly, religion, and property.”

So while we are enjoying our annual repaste, let us not forget the men and women who protect the freedoms we hold so dear.
